Message From the Principal:
Dear Sullivans’ School Community,
This is my first year at The Sullivans' School after being at Ikego Elementary School, a neighboring school in the Yokosuka community. This is my 19th year in DoDDS have previously serving as a classroom teacher, assistant principal, and principal in Germany and as a staff developer and chief of staff in the Isles District in DoDDS-Europe.
Welcome to the 2008-09 School Year! We had a great opening ceremony in the school gym on August 25 as the 7th Fleet Navy Band welcomed our students to the new school year. While the rain changed our venue from large courtyard area to the school gym, there was still a great excitement in the air.
Our teachers spent their first duty days working hard arranging furniture, preparing bulletin boards, designing schedules, and developing lessons to begin this school year. For some it was moving in. There are thirty-three new educators to The Sullivans’ School this year. Fifteen of them are classroom teachers and the remaining are specialists. Our newest teachers come from a variety of locations: here in the local community, other schools in Japan or the Pacific, DoDDS schools in Europe, and stateside DoDEA schools. Several teachers are brand new to DoDEA coming from all over the United States. Such a turn over can often be a real shot in the arm to a school as new colleagues come with their ideas and experiences.
It has been a fast summer of construction projects. Our gym has a repaired roof and new ceiling and the first of students’ rest rooms in the B Building have been refurbished. A drainage ditch outside the cafeteria doors will eliminate the rain puddles in the morning and recess line up areas. Some air conditioners have been replaced and others are on order. Other major initiatives still in the works include improving the playground surface area, installing carpet in the B Building, and implementing an automated lunch ticket system.
You will play a vital role this year as you partner with us to make your child’s school experience a successful one. I look forward to partnering with our families this school year to continue to keep The Sullivans’ School a great place for kids.
